Men 0ver 35 - March 5th
Stage 1
The 2022 Masters intercounty championships almost finished in the first stage for Norfolk’s Over 35 men’s team. Luckily they did just enough on countback to get one of the ‘best of the rest’ slots into the Main Premier Finals.
Team:
Jamie Goodrich
Marcus Cowie
Neil Cross
David Gouldby
Stuart Cowie
The Finals - April 30th
Some late call-ups to fill vacant slots in the team for the Finals weekend brought a fresh look to the team.
Team:
Jamie Goodrich
James Pickles
Neil Cross
David Gouldby
Matthew Bolt
Tom Smith
The finals were at the Hallamshire Squash Club in Yorkshire. Norfolk were fast out of the blocks in the quarter-finals and their efforts overturned Hampshire 5-0. This lined them up for Buckinghamshire in the semi-finals. The team was adjusted with Tom Smith stepping in for Neil Cross who had work (Fire service) commitments. The tie was a very tight encounter, with Tom Smith’s performance amazing the whole team as he raised his level to beat his far higher ranked player.
With a 3-0 win for Pickles and a nail biting 3-2 for Goodrich this gave Norfolk the 3-2 win they needed to put them through to another National Final!
The Final on Sunday morning against Warwickshire, although competitive, finished as per the form book. The very strong Warwickshire team took an early lead and pushed for the finish line. Only Matthew Bolt was able to win at number 4 string giving Warwickshire a deserved 4-1 victory.
A great performance overall, showing Norfolk’s continued strength in the Masters Categories.
