                                                          Report

Norfolk 's Junior County Squash closed tournament saw no fewer than three double title-winning champions crowned after a packed weekend of matches at the East Anglia Tennis and Squash Club in Norwich .

Harry Taylor and Sophie Hodges repeated their performances from last year in each claiming both Under 19 and U17 trophies, and were joined as ‘double' champions by Ailish Reeson who claimed the girls U15 and U13 titles.

William Henden retained the Boys U13 Trophy, and first time county champions included Liam Bond (Boys U11) and Katie Cox (Girls U11), whilst Lasith Ranasinghe claimed his second county title in winning the Boys U15 trophy.

The Boys U11 saw the closest match of the weekend with Sam McCluskey saving several match points to record an enthralling 12/10, 7/11, 11/9, 9/11, 16/14 semi-final win over Daniel Heffer. Liam Bond proved too strong for Sam in the U11 Final, and the plate final proved equally competitive with young Joe Henden just overcoming James Peterson 3-2.

In the Girls U11 final, Katie Cox reversed last year's result with a 11/7,11/6,12/14,12/10 over Bonnie Butler, and Bronwyn Moxey recovered from 0-2 down to beat Rosie Pooley 3-2 in the plate final.

The boys U13 Finals went right to the wire with William Henden repeating last year's U11 win over Milo Butler, again by 3 games to 2, and Phil Davis also beating Daniel Heffer 3-2 in the Plate Final.

In the Girls U13 event Ailish ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner over Katie Cox, with Bonnie Butler gaining some consolation with a comfortable plate win over Chloe Peterson

Adam Crafer was unfortunately unable to defend his Boys U15 title due to other sporting commitments, which left the door open for his county team-mates to fight it out. The surprise package however was squash newcomer Johnnie Carmichael-Plester who very nearly upset the seeding with a 11/6, 3/11, 11/7, 7/11, 8/11 quarter final defeat to No.3 seed Will Henden. Lasith Ranasinghe eased through to the final without dropping a game before snatching victory over Alex Coburn 11/13,11/6,11/9,7/11,11/9 in another tremendously close final.

Robby Coates comfortably beat Kieran Dodman in the plate final. In the Girls U15 event Ailish gained another comfortable 3-0 win over Alice Heffer.

In the Boys U17 final, favourite Harry Taylor was pressed hard by Connor Doy but had too much experience and ran out the winner 3-0. In the plate final, a much closer game saw Izaak Butler overcome Jack Andrews in a very competitive four-set battle.

The showpiece U19 boys final was contested for the second year in a row by reigning champion Harry Taylor, who overcame Alex Williams 3-0 in the semi, and Jordan Creed, who had a titanic, seesaw, five-set win over Jack Bell in his semi. Both players gave it their all in an intensely competitive match. The first two sets were shared one apiece and the crucial third set saw Harry claw his way back from several points down to secure a narrow 12-10 win. He won the fourth to win 3-1 and secure the title for a second year in a row. In the U19 plate final, Alexander Oliver came back from two sets to one down against Louis Kemp to snatch the trophy in a five-set thriller.

County chairman, Steve Mooney, said: “ "The entry numbers and standard at this year's competition was one of the highest seen for a long time. As result of our county coaching programme, the juniors are really developing into promising squash players.

“International coach Richard Millman is working wonders with all our juniors and this was clearly evident in the weekend's standard of play. What was particularly impressive was the strength in depth in all age groups from U11 all the way through to U19. It is hoped that these standards are maintained for the forthcoming inter-county weekends, where our Norfolk juniors will compete against some of the top players in England .”

Thanks to Tony Henden, Ian Cox, Sarah Heffer, David Youngs and Steve Mooney for tournament organisation.
