On 24th April, Broadland Ladies Squash teams celebrated the end of the 2016/17 Ladies squash season with a 10 a side ladies match, which also included the League match between the Broadland Ladies first and second Teams. Now in its third season, the Norfolk & North Suffolk Ladies League had been dominated by Barnham Broom Ladies for the first 2 years, but with no team this year a new winner was guaranteed. Broadland Ladies 1 had been consistent all season, losing just once, and just needing a few more points to clinch the League win. Youngsters Jodie Dowe and Kirstie Johnson had shown improvement all season, and continued this form with 3-0 wins over Cathy Cramer and Marisa England-Hunt. With first team players Julie Johnson and Shelly Shearing also recording 3-0 wins against Paula Jones and Donna Bonnett, the League title was well & truly secured. Congratulations to Julie Johnson and her Team. Broadland Sports Club are currently the only Club fielding 2 Ladies Teams. The second Team, known as the Broadland Bees, have also gone from strength to strength under the Captaincy of Marisa England-Hunt, and have added to their playing squad during the season. This was evident from the many close ‘friendly’ matches played, involving Joy Grimes, Claire Houghton, Teresa Bowen, Holly Chase, Debra Nicholson, Deena Ball, Jayne Dibb, Angela Ransome and youngsters Mia Chase, Jasmine Thirst, Abi Cramer, Millie Cunningham and Cara Hayes-Bradley.
The winning Team Captain Julie Johnson, attributed Broadlands success to Club coach and first team no.1 player Hannah Jones, and thanked her for her ‘hard work and contribution to ladies squash participation at Broadland Sports Club’. Julie went on to say ‘’ our consistency throughout the season & strength in depth paid dividends. It’s also good to see so many ladies playing, and especially good to see the next generation of players coming through and getting the opportunity to have match time on court’’. Club owner Tony Henden says that he is absolutely delighted with the growth of ladies squash and Broadland, and that he remains committed to supporting all levels of squash from per-school, mini-squash, and junior squash to school sessions, adult, Team and social squash events. Also stating that there have been many significant contributors to our success which include Club coaches, Hannah Jones, Jake Bond, Robert Thirst, and Samuel Henden.
